How is Holi Celebrated?
Holi is a Hindu festival that has been celebrated since ancient times. It is said that during the Holi Festival, the gods turn a blind eye, and it is one of the few occasions when extremely devout Hindus let loose. On the first day of the festival, a bonfire is lit to symbolically burn everything bad and usher in a new colorful and vibrant future.
People spend their days smearing colored powder on their faces, splashing colored water on themselves, celebrating parties, and dancing under sprinklers. Bhang, a paste made from cannabis plants, is also traditionally consumed as part of celebrations.
Special Holi events with music, rain dances and colors are organized in the big cities of India.
At the Holi Festival, participants toss powdered dye into the air, coating everyone in attendance in vibrant colors. In a religious sense, colors are rich in symbolism and have multiple meanings - they can signify a vibrant new life, and even represent sin in some way. For some, washing off the dye at the end of the day can mean a new commitment to living well, like cleansing themselves of evils and demons.
